Mohanlal Honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023, Receives Nationwide Praise

New Delhi/Kochi: Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, renowned for landmark films such as Iruvar, Vanaprastham, and Bharatham, has been awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2023, the highest recognition in Indian cinema. The Information and Broadcasting Ministry announced on Saturday that the actor, director, and producer was selected for the honour by the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee for his “iconic contribution to Indian cinema.”
The 65 -year -old actor will receive the award during the 71st National Film Awards ceremony on September 23. The ministry described Mohanlal’s cinematic journey as “remarkable,” highlighting his versatility, unmatched talent, and dedication that have set a golden standard in Indian film history.
Mohanlal, who made his debut as an antagonist in Fazil’s Manjil Virinja Pookkal (1980), has appeared in over 350 films spanning Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada cinema. His celebrated works include Manichitrathazhu, Kireedam, Drishyam, Thanmathra, Company, Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol, and Pulimurugan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Mohanlal, calling him a “leading light of Malayalam cinema who epitomises excellence and versatility.” Modi added that Mohanlal’s performances in multiple languages and his contribution to theatre reflect his passion for Indian culture and inspire generations. Replying to the Prime Minister, Mohanlal expressed that he was “deeply humbled and profoundly honoured,” thanking all who supported and inspired him throughout his career.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan described the award as “truly deserving” and a moment of pride for every Malayali, while Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan called Mohanlal “the pride of Malayalam” for his natural and unique acting style over four and a half decades. Fellow actors and filmmakers, including Mammootty, Manju Warrier, Urvashi, Fasil, and Kamal, also extended their congratulations, praising his contributions to Malayalam and Indian cinema.
At a press conference in Kochi, Mohanlal said the award belongs not only to him but to Indian cinema and its audience. “This is not just my award, it belongs to everyone who has walked alongside me on this journey. I thank God, my family, my colleagues, and the audience for their unwavering support,” he said. Mohanlal described cinema as “magic” and “God-given,” emphasising honesty, dedication, and collective effort as the foundations of his success.
He also credited his mother’s blessings and recalled sharing the news with her on Sunday morning. Despite the recognition, Mohanlal remains focused on his craft, beginning work on Drishyam 3 on Monday. He urged the industry to continue producing quality films and expressed hope that the award will inspire the new generation of filmmakers and actors.
Mohanlal’s illustrious career includes two National Film Awards for Best Actor, nine Kerala State Awards, and numerous international honours. In addition, he was awarded the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2019 for his contributions to the arts.
