Protests Demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation Cannot Be Suppressed, Says M A Baby

New Delhi: CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby said the agitation demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar could not be suppressed. The protest had the support of the entire country, he said, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah must realise that batons, barricades and pellet guns would not stop the movement.
Speaking at a press conference, Baby said the party’s Central Committee had decided to continue the agitation vigorously in cooperation with all those willing to join it.
Those who came to stage peaceful protests demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation were brutally beaten, he stated. Public life was also disrupted through the cancellation of trains, the closure of metro services and internet shutdowns. The Union government had restricted people’s freedom of movement, he said, adding that these measures violated Supreme Court directives.
However, the restrictions would not bring the agitation to an end, he said. Hundreds of protest sites like Jantar Mantar are emerging across the country, and the agitation would intensify in the coming days. He added that Gyanesh Kumar, along with Modi and Shah, who were protecting him, would not be able to continue for much longer.
The press conference was held at the CPI(M)’s AKG Bhavan in Delhi. Senior party leader Brinda Karat and SFI and DYFI leaders who had been subjected to brutal assault by the police and central forces also attended.
