New Delhi: Left parties on Wednesday issued a joint call for nationwide protests condemning the US aggression against Venezuela and expressing solidarity with the people of Latin America.
In a joint statement, the parties said they 'strongly denounce and condemn the US aggression against Venezuela and the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores,' calling it an attack on a sovereign nation and a blatant violation of the United Nations Charter.
The statement referred to remarks by US President Donald Trump, in which he reportedly said that the United States would capture Venezuela’s oil reserves, asserting that this 'laid bare the real intentions behind this aggression.' It also cited US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who, according to the statement, warned that Cuba and Mexico would be the next targets.
The Left parties said these statements, coming days after the release of the US National Security Strategy 2025, make it clear that 'US imperialism seeks to impose its hegemony over the entire world, even if it means carrying out military attacks.' They further alleged that the US wants to impose a 'Trump corollary of the infamous Monroe Doctrine,' treating the entire Western Hemisphere as its backyard and enforcing its writ.
Referring to reports from Venezuela, the statement said that people there are mobilising in large numbers against US aggression and in defence of their country’s sovereignty. The Left parties expressed 'wholehearted support and solidarity with the fighting people of Venezuela.'
Calling for action at home, the parties announced a nationwide protest against US aggression and in solidarity with the people of Latin America. They appealed to 'all peace-loving, anti-imperialist people of our country to mobilise in large numbers and actively participate in these protests.'
The statement also urged the Government of India to 'join the voices of countries across the world condemning US aggression and stand firmly with Venezuela.'
The joint statement was issued by M A Baby, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist); D Raja, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India; Dipankar Bhattacharya, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation; Manoj Bhattacharya, General Secretary of the Revolutionary Socialist Party; and G Devarajan, General Secretary of the All India Forward Bloc.
