Chennai: Kamal Haasan has praised C Joseph Vijay for his decision to shut down 717 liquor outlets across Tamil Nadu shortly after assuming office as Chief Minister.

The actor-politician said liquor sales should never be the responsibility of a government and stressed that administrations should instead focus on controlling alcohol consumption and addressing its social impact.

Kamal Haasan noted that ordinary families in Tamil Nadu had long demanded the closure of liquor shops located near places of worship, educational institutions, and bus stands. He welcomed Vijay’s move, saying it reflected a response to a longstanding public concern.

The closures are part of the TVK government’s broader promise to gradually implement prohibition in the state. As a first step, the new administration ordered the shutdown of 717 TASMAC liquor outlets.

Kamal Haasan further said the number of closures should increase in the future and expressed hope that the initiative would continue toward building an alcohol-free Tamil Nadu. He also extended his wishes to the newly formed government led by Vijay.
