John Brittas Urges Centre to Allocate Funds to Address LPG Shortage

New Delhi: John Brittas MP has urged the Government of India to allocate the necessary funds to address the ongoing LPG shortage affecting the country.

Speaking on the issue, Brittas said the crisis has already had serious consequences in Kerala, where hotels and even some colleges have reportedly been forced to shut down due to the lack of cooking gas. He warned that the shortage is being felt across the country and called for urgent intervention by the central government.

The MP also appealed to Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi to travel across the country to directly understand the difficulties faced by people due to the LPG shortage.

Brittas cautioned that the situation could escalate into a crisis comparable to the disruptions seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said that while the arrival of two LPG cargo ships had been widely publicised, the country actually requires at least three ships of LPG to meet requirements for two days.

He stressed that while domestic LPG supply must remain a priority, the government should also consider the impact of the shortage on commercial sectors and the broader economy. He also said that the Finance Ministry must recognise how the LPG crisis could affect economic activity.

Brittas further noted that the situation in West Asia is adding pressure on India’s energy security, comparing the current challenge to earlier disruptions such as demonetisation, the rollout of GST, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

He also questioned whether Trump’s statements about facilitating India’s purchase of Russian oil were intended as assistance or amounted to an insult to the country.

He also asked how the government could continue to refer to Trump as “my friend” despite his remarks that undermined India’s dignity.
