New Delhi: In a major step towards boosting passenger security, Indian Railways has unveiled plans to install CCTV cameras across its entire fleet, covering all 74,000 passenger coaches and 15,000 locomotives. The move comes after successful pilot implementations and encouraging feedback from select routes.
As per the plan, each coach will be fitted with four dome-type cameras, two on either side of each entrance, ensuring full coverage of entry and exit points. Locomotives, meanwhile, will be equipped with six cameras, positioned at the front, rear, sides, and within the driver's cabin. Additionally, two microphones will be mounted on the locomotive control panels to enhance audio surveillance.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu recently assessed the rollout progress during a high-level review meeting, which also included top Railway Board officials.
Advanced Features and AI Integration
The surveillance network will offer 360-degree ultra-clear visuals, capable of functioning in low-light conditions and at high speeds exceeding 100 kmph. All units will be STQC certified and aligned with the latest technical standards. Plans are underway to incorporate AI-powered monitoring under the IndiaAI mission, enabling real-time threat detection and automated analysis.
Officials clarified that the CCTV coverage would be limited to shared areas such as coach entrances, and would not infringe upon passengers’ personal spaces. The system is intended to deter crimes like theft and harassment, while enhancing the overall travel experience by making trains safer and more secure.
