New Delhi: In the backdrop of the US military intervention in Venezuela, the Ministry of External Affairs has advised Indian citizens to avoid all non-essential travel to Venezuela. The Ministry of External Affairs has also urged all Indians currently in Venezuela to exercise extreme caution and remain in constant contact with the Indian Embassy in Caracas.


Indians have been asked to contact the embassy through the phone number +58-412-9584288 (including WhatsApp calls) or via email at [email protected]

. According to estimates by the Indian Embassy in Caracas, there are around 50 Indian nationals and about 30 persons of Indian origin currently in Venezuela.


The US intervention in Venezuela followed allegations by Donald Trump that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was involved in drug trafficking. During the intervention, carried out in violation of international law, Maduro and his wife were taken into custody. Venezuela is one of the countries with the largest oil reserves in the world, and the United States is said to be targeting control over these oil resources. Trump has also claimed that the US would govern Venezuela until a new regime.
