Panaji: Crucial details are now emerging about how the nightclub in Arpora village, Goa, turned into a death trap. Panic spread in the area when people rushed out trying to escape the fire. The narrow corridor and exit leading outside the club worsened the scale of the tragedy. This also created challenges for fire and rescue personnel trying to extinguish the blaze.

The fire broke out shortly after midnight on Sunday. The death toll from the nightclub blaze has risen to 25. Many victims died due to suffocation. Among the dead are four tourists and 14 staff members. There are allegations that the club had committed several safety violations. The exact cause of the fire is still unknown.

The fire is believed to have started on the upper floor. Due to inadequate ventilation, people suffered severe suffocation. The nightclub is located near a creek, and the only access to it is through a narrow lane. Because of this, fire trucks had to be parked 400 meters away, delaying rescue operations.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said the nightclub had not complied with fire safety norms. A judicial inquiry has been ordered to determine the cause of the accident. Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said panchayats will conduct fire safety audits for all nightclubs and will issue notices on Monday directing establishments to obtain the necessary safety clearances. He added that the licenses of establishments that fail to comply will be canceled.
