New Delhi: The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) described the National Democratic Alliance’s victory in the Bihar assembly elections as a setback for the Mahagathbandhan, alleging that the ruling coalition made extensive use of state machinery, financial muscle and political manoeuvres during the campaign.

In a statement, the CPI M said the NDA also drew advantage from what it termed the communal and caste-based rhetoric of senior leaders, including the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, adding that a supportive corporate media helped drown out the opposition’s focus on livelihood and governance issues.

The party said the Bihar results underline the need for stronger unity among opposition forces to effectively challenge the BJP. It added that it would study other factors behind the outcome.

Thanking voters who supported CPI M candidates and those of allied parties, the Polit Bureau said it would continue to lead struggles for the rights of the oppressed and exploited.
