New Delhi: The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has held both the Trinamool Congress- led West Bengal government and the BJP -led Union Government responsible for the devastating floods in Kolkata, charging them with criminal negligence and misplaced priorities.

Expressing condolences to the families of those who lost their lives due to electrocution and accidents during the heavy rains, the CPI M said the scale of flooding was the outcome not only of torrential downpours but also of systemic failures and erosion of public infrastructure.

The Polit Bureau said while crores were being spent on beautification drives and corporate-led “smart city” projects, the state of drains, wetlands, and waterbodies remained neglected, leaving the city vulnerable to recurrent flooding. Disaster preparedness, it added, has been reduced to token announcements.

The CPI M demanded immediate compensation for victims’ families and urged the state to carry out relief and rehabilitation on a war footing.

The Polit Bureau also directed all party units in West Bengal to actively take part in relief measures with the support of Red Volunteers, who have played a crucial role during past emergencies.
