New Delhi: Twelve people in Haryana have died after drinking contaminated water in Chhainsa, Palwal district. Among the deceased are five school children. These 12 deaths occurred within 15 days. Reports indicate that more than 5,000 people have fallen ill. The health department has suggested that the incident may have been caused by improper chlorination of the water.

Locals stated that the first three deaths occurred almost 15 days ago. Those who consumed the water quickly began to feel ill and eventually died. Many people have reported symptoms such as fever, cough, body pain, and vomiting. Concern has grown with the increasing number of deaths.

The health department is collecting blood samples from local residents and conducting tests. Most people who died had similar symptoms. Locals claim that unsafe drinking water is the primary cause of the illnesses and deaths.

Out of more than 400 total blood samples collected, 300 have been thoroughly examined. Among these, two people were confirmed to have hepatitis B or C. Of the 107 water samples collected, 23 (approximately 21%) were found to be of poor quality. The presence of bacteria and inadequate chlorination has been detected in the drinking water, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases. It was found that some deaths were due to hepatitis B and C, but most were caused by liver failure.
