New Delhi: CJP leader Sourav Das has said that the country is facing a situation similar to the Emergency, alleging that justice is not being delivered. “We are living under an Emergency-like situation...Everyone can see what is happening here,” he said.

A court has extended the judicial custody of CJP leaders Sourav Das and Ashutosh Ranka by another two days in connection with their protest at Jantar Mantar. Delhi Police had sought a five-day extension, arguing that the leaders would organise another protest if released.

Despite both leaders stating that they had not called for any fresh protest, the police maintained their demand for an extension of custody.

Following the extension, the case against the two leaders was transferred to the Interstate Cell of the Delhi Police Crime Branch. The case now concerns allegations that they trespassed onto a prohibited site through private property. The CJP alleged that the nature of the case was being changed to tighten the legal proceedings against them.

The leaders have been in custody for five days. They were produced before a police officer yesterday in the name of a court appearance, the CJP alleged. Their custody was extended at the request of the police.

The CJP accused the authorities of deliberately delaying bail proceedings and creating fresh obstacles to keep the leaders in jail.

Sourav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were arrested on October 13 for staging a protest at Jantar Mantar while carrying the national flag. They were remanded to five days of judicial custody the following day and subsequently shifted to Tihar Jail. The arrests were made on the grounds that they had violated the restrictions imposed at Jantar Mantar.

The CJP is conducting the agitation demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and action on issues related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
