Assam Floods: Death Toll Rises to 95 as Over 1.6 Lakh Affected

Guwahati: The flood crisis in Assam remains critical, with six more deaths reported over the past 24 hours, taking the overall death toll to 95.

More than 1.6 lakh people across 563 villages have been directly affected by the floods. Sivasagar is the worst-hit district, with over 57,000 people facing severe hardship.

Authorities have issued alerts in 14 districts after the water level of the Dhansiri (South) River rose in Numaligarh. The districts under alert are Golaghat, Lakhimpur, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Biswanath, Dhemaji, Kamrup Metropolitan, Jorhat, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Nagaon, Darrang, Karbi Anglong and Udalguri.

A total of seven major embankments have been damaged, including five in Biswanath and two in Darrang. A steel bridge in Charaideo and a footbridge in Udalguri have also suffered damage.

Waterlogging remains severe in urban areas, including Guwahati. Around 80 people were evacuated by boats from the Satgaon and Hatigaon areas.

Authorities have accommodated 12,356 people in 45 relief camps that have been opened across the affected regions. More than 32,000 people are receiving essential supplies, including rice, pulses, salt and cattle feed, through 59 relief distribution centres.

With further rainfall expected in river catchment areas, authorities are continuously monitoring water levels in major rivers.

Floodwaters have submerged 16,951 hectares of agricultural land. More than 35,000 livestock have been affected, while around 8,500 animals have reportedly been swept away by floodwaters.
