5.1-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Assam’s Morigaon District, Tremors Felt Across Northeast

Dispur: An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck Morigaon district in Assam early this morning, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said. The tremor was felt at around 4.17 am. The epicentre was located at a depth of about 50 kilometres, on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River.


Strong tremors were felt in Morigaon, triggering panic among residents. No reports of damage or casualties have been received so far. Authorities have warned that aftershocks are possible and advised the public to remain cautious.


According to national media reports, tremors were also felt in nearby districts including Kamrup Metropolitan, Nagaon, East Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, Hojai, Dima Hasao, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Dhubri, South Salmara–Mankachar, and Goalpara.


The earthquake may also have been felt in parts of central and western Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and several regions of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and West Bengal, reports said.
