All India Lawyers' Union Condemns Removal of Sonam Wangchuk From Protest Site

New Delhi: The All India Lawyers' Union (AILU) has strongly condemned the Central government's decision to shift Sonam Wangchuk to a hospital, alleging that it was an attempt to suppress the ongoing student protest through the use of force.

In a statement, the union said such action against peaceful protests amounted to a violation of fundamental rights.

Senior Supreme Court advocate and AILU General Secretary P V Surendranath, along with Treasurer Anil K Chauhan, visited Jantar Mantar on July 17 to meet Wangchuk and the students participating in the indefinite hunger strike. Following this, an AILU Delhi State Committee delegation led by Sanjay Kumar visited the protest site and extended full support to the students.

The union alleged that the actions of the Delhi Police and other security forces to disperse the peaceful student protest reflected the Central government's "authoritarian approach." It also expressed strong protest against the decision to forcefully hospitalise Wangchuk, who had been on an indefinite hunger strike for the past 20 days, raising issues of public concern.

According to the statement, the students have reaffirmed that they will continue their protest and proceed with their planned march to Parliament on July 20.

The AILU also extended its support to the indefinite hunger strike being led at Kranti Corner, Jantar Mantar, by SFI All India President Adarsh M Saji and SFI All India Joint Secretary and Delhi State Secretary Aishe Ghosh.
