New Delhi: A strong earthquake originating in Afghanistan triggered tremors across parts of northern India and Pakistan on Saturday evening, causing momentary alarm among residents in affected areas.
People in Delhi and neighbouring regions reported noticeable shaking, prompting many to move outdoors as a precaution. Similar tremors were also experienced in Islamabad, leading to brief panic among residents in Pakistan’s capital.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake measured 6.1 in magnitude and struck at 7.04 pm IST. The agency said the epicentre was located in Afghanistan at a depth of 215 kilometres beneath the surface.
Data released by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) placed the epicentre around 43 kilometres south of Jurm in northeastern Afghanistan.
The considerable depth of the quake likely contributed to the tremors being felt across a wider geographical area beyond Afghanistan’s borders.
