Thiruvananthapuram: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels have risen in Kerala, with the State Disaster Management Authority issuing a yellow alert in several parts of the state.

Based on data from the past 24 hours, a yellow alert has been declared in Kottarakkara, Konni, Chengannur, Changanassery, Munnar, Thrithala and Mananthavady, where the UV index ranged between 6 and 7. Officials said a UV index of 6 to 7 falls under yellow alert, 8 to 10 under orange alert and above 11 under red alert.

Authorities warned that prolonged exposure to high UV radiation can cause sunburn, skin diseases, eye problems and other health complications.

The UV index is usually at its peak between 10 am and 3 pm. People have been advised to avoid direct sunlight for long periods during these hours.

Those who work outdoors, fishermen engaged in sea and inland fishing, water transport workers, motorbike riders and tourists have been asked to take extra care. Persons with skin or eye diseases, cancer patients and those with low immunity are also advised to remain cautious.

Officials recommend using hats, umbrellas and sunglasses while stepping out during the day. Wearing cotton clothes that cover the body and taking rest in shaded areas during travel or outdoor work are also advised.

UV levels are generally higher in hilly and tropical regions. Residents in such areas have been asked to remain alert and follow safety guidelines.
