Thiruvananthapuram: Minister V N Vasavan, through a Facebook post, has shared that Vizhinjam International Port is set to complete one year since it began commercial operations, marking a remarkable journey of rapid growth and global recognition. In just a short span, the port has established services connecting multiple continents, including America, Europe, Africa, and Asia, securing a significant position on the international maritime map.

The first phase of the project, costing 7,700 crore rupees, sees a major investment of around 4,600 crore rupees by the state government. The entire 1,350 crore rupees required for the breakwater construction has been fully funded by the government. Additionally, 1,482.92 crore rupees are earmarked for the construction of a dedicated railway line to facilitate cargo movement.

Vizhinjam has earned the distinction of being the fastest port in India to handle 1 million TEUs, achieving this milestone in just ten months and surpassing the maximum capacity target of the first phase. Since the commencement of operations, the port has managed 615 vessels and 1.32 million TEUs. Among these, 41 ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) over 399 meters in length have berthed at Vizinjam, the largest vessels ever to arrive at an Indian port. This includes 154 vessels longer than 300 meters and 45 vessels with a draft exceeding 16 meters.

The port also set a new record in South Asia with the arrival of the MSC Verona, which had a 17.1-meter draft, making it the deepest -drafted vessel handled in the region. In addition, Vizhinjam received the world’s largest container vessel, MSC Irene, and handled 10,576 TEUs in a single call by MSC Paloma, both highlighting its operational capability.

Vizhinjam continues to lead in efficiency, achieving a high Gross Crane Ratio (GCR) of 28.52 in October 2025. It is also the first port in India where women operate automated cranes, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity and modern port operations. These accomplishments have been made possible through the meticulous oversight of the state government and the efficient operations of the Adani Vizhinjam Port team. With the upcoming commencement of gateway cargo movement and transshipment operations, the port’s strategic importance is expected to grow even further.
