Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala’s Vizhinjam International Seaport, a landmark in India’s maritime infrastructure, is set to be officially commissioned on May 2, 2025, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to inaugurate the event. The Prime Minister’s Office has confirmed his participation to the port authorities. Located near the state capital, Vizhinjam is India’s first deep-water transshipment port and marks Kerala’s emergence on the global maritime trade map.

Operations at the port began on July 11, 2024, with the arrival of its first container ship, San Fernando—an event that marked a historic step in Indian shipping. Less than eight months later, on March 7, 2025, the port welcomed its 200th vessel, A S ALVA, signifying rapid progress. According to long-term projections, the port is expected to generate a total revenue of 2,15,000 crore rupees over the next 36 years, with Kerala’s share estimated at 35,000 crore rupees. The state government is likely to start receiving financial benefits around 2029, once the port becomes fully operational.

The inauguration ceremony will be attended by several key dignitaries, including Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Union Minister of Ports Sarbananda Sonowal, Kerala Ports Minister V N Vasavan, Industries Minister P Rajeev, and industrialist Gautam Adani. Port officials had been awaiting official confirmation of the commissioning date, which has now been finalised, paving the way for a high-profile launch event.
