Thiruvananthapuram: The Vizhinjam International Seaport has emerged as the top-performing port in cargo handling across southern and eastern India for the fourth month in a row. In May, the port handled 1.04 lakh containers, maintaining a steady volume close to April’s figure of 1,04,413 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units).
In March, Vizhinjam managed 1,08,770 TEUs, while in February it recorded 78,833 TEUs. Since its operational launch on July 11 last year, the port has handled a total of 7.33 lakh containers, highlighting its rapid growth as a key maritime hub on the Indian coastline.
An average of 50 vessels are arriving at the port each month. The consistent movement has positioned Vizhinjam ahead of other ports in the region in terms of cargo volume.
Recently, major international vessels such as MSC Michela Cappellini and Turkiye docked at Vizhinjam. The Cappellini is part of MSC’s Africa Express Service, which connects East African countries, while the Turkiye vessel operates under MSC’s Jade Service, linking ports across Asia and Europe. Both services are now making regular stops at Vizhinjam, further strengthening the port’s global connectivity and strategic relevance in international shipping routes.
MSC Irina—the world’s largest container ship—also made its first-ever port call in India at Vizhinjam, further solidifying the port’s rising status in global maritime logistics.
