UV Radiation Levels Rise In Kerala; Yellow Alert In Six Locations

Thiruvananthapuram: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels have increased to concerning levels in several parts of Kerala, prompting the State Disaster Management Authority to issue a yellow alert in select districts.
Data recorded in the last 24 hours shows a UV Index of 6 in Kottarakkara (Kollam district), Konni (Pathanamthitta), Chengannur (Alappuzha), Changanassery (Kottayam), Munnar (Idukki) and Mananthavady (Wayanad). Officials said prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays at this level can cause sunburn, skin problems, eye disorders and other health issues.
Authorities have advised the public to take precautions, especially between 10 am and 3 pm, when UV radiation is usually at its peak. People are urged to avoid direct sunlight for extended periods during these hours.
Special caution has been advised for those who work outdoors, including fishermen engaged in marine and inland fishing, water transport workers, bike riders and tourists. Individuals suffering from skin diseases, eye conditions, cancer or low immunity are also advised to limit exposure.
People stepping out during daytime are encouraged to use protective items such as hats, umbrellas and sunglasses. Wearing loose, full-sleeved cotton clothing that covers the body can help reduce direct exposure. Taking short breaks in shaded areas during travel or outdoor work is also recommended.
Officials noted that UV levels are generally higher in hilly and tropical regions. Residents in such areas have been asked to remain alert and follow safety guidelines.
