Varantharapilly(Thrissur): The mother-in-law has been arrested in connection with the death of a pregnant woman who was burned at her marital home in Thrissur. The accused, Rajani (49) of Nandipulam, Mattumala Makoth, was taken into custody by the police and remanded by the court.

On November 26, around 4 pm, Archana (20), wife of Rajani’s son Sharon, was found dead near the house in a nearby canal, having suffered burns after being doused with oil. She was five months pregnant at the time.

The case was registered by Varantharapilly police following a complaint by Archana’s father, Haridas. Sharon, the husband, is currently in remand. Police noted that Sharon is already an accused in three other criminal cases across Varantharapilly and Puthukkad police stations.

Archana, daughter of Haridas and Jisha of Manaykkalakadavu, Veliathuparamb, had married Sharon in a love marriage six months ago. Since then, her father said, she had been prevented from contacting her family. The family claimed that Sharon kept Archana under strict control and did not allow her to make or receive phone calls.

Archana’s sister, Anu, alleged that Sharon had once beaten Archana in front of Alagappanagar Polytechnic and, when questioned, had warned that no one should ask anything, or he would kill her. The family has demanded a thorough investigation into the possible involvement of Sharon and his family in Archana’s death.
