Thrissur: As part of intensified road safety efforts Thrissur City Police conducted a week-long special drive from August 11 to 19, resulting in 345 cases being registered and 1,953 traffic violations identified across the city.
The operation, aimed at ensuring the road safety during the busy festive season, involved detailed inspections of buses, cars, lorries, and two-wheeler at various checkpoints throughout the city. The inspections were led by the city’s traffic police unit under the supervision of City Police Commissioner.
A major focus of the drive was curbing driving under the influence of alcohol, with 212 cases registered against offenders. Police used breath analyzers and conducted random roadside checks, especially during late-night hours.
133 drivers were booked for reckless or careless driving, a frequent cause of road accidents. A total of 1,720 lorries and 233 buses were fined for various violations including overloading, lack of proper documentation, emission norm violations, and unsafe driving practices.
This proactive step is a part of the Onam Road Safety Campaign, which is being implemented across Kerala, with a special emphasis on busy urban areas like Thrissur that see a sharp increase in vehicular traffic and public transport usage during the festive season.
City Police Commissioner emphasized that these strict measures are taken in the interest of public safety, particularly during Onam when roads are crowded with holiday shoppers, travelers, and festival-goers.
“The drive will continue until the end of the Onam season. We urge passengers, drivers, and transport companies to cooperate with the police to ensure a safe and incident-free festival for everyone,” the Commissioner stated.
The drive is Kerala Police’s broader Zero Accident Mission, which aims to reduce road accidents and fatalities through a combination of enforcement, public awareness, and technology-driven monitoring.
Authorities have also issued advisories to transport operators to ensure vehicles are in good condition, drivers are well-rested, and schedules are adhered to without compromising safety.
