Thiruvananthapuram: Promoting public health, hygiene awareness, and environmental sustainability, the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has distributed 25,000 menstrual cups to girl students across government schools in the city. The initiative is part of a broader set of programs focused on community advanced standards.

The distribution was officially inaugurated by MLA K.K. Shailaja at Pattom St. Mary’s School. The project primarily targets higher secondary students, with a focus on those from minority communities and economically weaker sections. Menstrual cups are being provided free of cost as part of the Corporation’s annual Smart School Development Plan.

Speaking at the event, Mayor Arya Rajendran emphasized the Corporation's commitment to inclusive development and educational empowerment. Other officials, including C.S. Sujadevi, R. Surakumari, and Amshu Vamadevan, also addressed the gathering.

As part of this initiative, awareness campaigns are being conducted to educate students on menstrual hygiene and the benefits of sustainable alternatives like menstrual cups. These efforts align with the broader objectives of the Corporation to ensure student health, improve sanitation, and reduce plastic and sanitary waste in the environment.

Kerala has long been a pioneer in implementing progressive health and education policies. In recent years, various districts have rolled out menstrual hygiene management programs, including the distribution of reusable menstrual products. Alappuzha and Ernakulam have implemented similar schemes under local self-government initiatives. These efforts not only empower adolescent girls by breaking the stigma surrounding menstruation but also contribute to a greener future by minimizing the use of disposable sanitary products
