Thiruvananthapuram: The family of fisherman Shijin, who went missing after a boat accident at Muthalapozhi, staged a sit-in protest in front of the Coastal Police Station, alleging that authorities have failed to take effective steps to trace him even after eight days.

Shijin's wife Stiji, along with their two children—four-year-old Ebrin, who is undergoing treatment for a heart condition, and two-year-old Raphael—participated in the protest. The family appealed to the authorities to intensify the search operation and bring back their loved one at the earliest.

Questioning the government's response, the family said they were prepared to accept Shijin in whatever condition he might be found and expressed anguish over the prolonged wait. They alleged that no meaningful action had been taken, while the police continued to maintain that search operations were in progress.

Shijin went missing on Friday night after the fishing boat he was travelling in capsized in rough seas near the Muthalapozhi harbour entrance. He had ventured into the sea along with boat owner Jose and fellow fishermen Freemon and Smith. Jose and Smith survived the incident, while Shijin disappeared in the sea.

According to the family and local fishermen, when they sought immediate assistance from the Coastal Police on the night of the accident, they were informed that the department did not have rescue boats or trained personnel capable of carrying out a sea rescue. The adverse weather and poor visibility delayed rescue efforts until the following day, after protests by fishermen prompted the deployment of Marine Enforcement, the Coast Guard and Navy personnel.

The family further alleged that despite visits by minister C P John and assurances of assistance, effective intervention had not materialised. With restrictions on venturing into the sea still in place, local fishermen continue to participate in the search, providing the only hope for Shijin's family.
