Kuthiran Twin Tunnels: Minor Landslide Reported, Officials Assess Situation

Thrissur: A minor landslide was reported above the Kuthiran twin tunnels on the National Highway connecting Palakkad and Thrissur districts following continuous heavy rainfall.

According to officials, soil and rocks slid down from two locations above the western entrance of the tunnel. After the incident came to light, the highway patrol team rushed to the site and assessed the situation.

Thrissur District Collector Shikha Surendran also visited the area and held discussions with officials concerned. Authorities said the ongoing heavy rain could lead to further movement of soil and trees on the hill above the tunnel.

Despite the incident, the District Collector clarified that there is currently no need to suspend traffic through the tunnel. She said vehicle movement would continue as usual and that traffic restrictions would be imposed only if found necessary after a detailed inspection by experts.

The Collector added that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has informed the district administration that there is no immediate cause for concern.

Meanwhile, CPI leader K. Rajan also urged the public not to panic over the incident. He said inspections would be carried out on top of the tunnel to assess the stability of the slope and verify whether natural drainage channels have been blocked, so that appropriate preventive measures can be taken if required.
