Kalpetta: The government township being constructed in the heart of Kalpetta for landslide survivors has reached a milestone, with the roofing of the 300th house now completed. The project is part of efforts to rehabilitate areas affected by landslides in Mundakkai and Churalmala.

The 11.42- kilometre network includes a 12.65- metre- wide main road and two 9.5 -metre -wide roads, which have been paved with stones and are entering the first stage of tarring. Roads connecting 35 clusters of houses and public buildings are being prepared for interlocking.

Infrastructure work is also progressing, including a 9-million-litre drinking water reservoir, ten sewage treatment plants, an underground electricity network, and drainage systems. Once housing construction is complete, facilities including a community centre, public market, health centre, anganwadi, landslide memorial, electricity substation, disaster management centre, open-air theatre, park, and football ground will be constructed.

The township will cover 64.47 hectares and include 410 houses, each equipped with a solar power system. A waste processing centre is also planned. The project is being executed through an EPC contract with the Oorulangkal Labour Contract Society, with a total cost of 299 crore rupees.
