Kozhikode: A leopard that had fallen into a 15-metre-deep well in Koodaranji, Kozhikode, Kerala, has been safely rescued by the Forest Department. The incident occurred on Tuesday night when the animal fell into an abandoned, unlined well located in the agricultural land of Perumpoli Kurian. Initially, farm workers suspected the presence of a large animal in the well, but it was not immediately identified. The leopard had moved into a small cave within the well, making direct observation difficult.
On Friday evening, cameras installed in the well confirmed the presence of a leopard. In response, the Forest Department initiated a rescue operation. A cage with bait was lowered into the well on Saturday afternoon using a tripod stand, rope, and pulley system provided by the Fire and Rescue Services. The leopard was safely trapped in the cage around 1 a.m. on Sunday. It was then transferred to the Thamarassery Range Forest Office for a health check. Authorities have stated that after further examination, the leopard will be released back into the forest.
The Forest Department has assured that the animal is healthy and that the rescue operation was conducted with minimal disturbance to the leopard.
