Kudumbashree Reaps Crores from Onam Market; Earns Rs 10 Crore by Selling Flowers and Vegetables

Thiruvananthapuram: Kudumbashree has recorded a bumper harvest from the Onam market, with women farmers earning Rs 10.07 crore through the sale of vegetables and flowers produced under the 'Onakkani' and 'Nirappolima' agricultural schemes. The sales were made at over 2,000 Onam marketing festivals organised across the state under Kudumbashree's leadership between August 20 and 25. Thrissur topped the state with sales of Rs 2.85 crore, followed by Palakkad at Rs 1.62 crore and Kannur at Rs 85.50 lakh.

Under the 'Onakkani' scheme, more than 33,000 farmer groups across the state produced 1,580.88 metric tonnes of traditional vegetables for the Onam feast, generating revenue of Rs 8.91 crore. The 'Nirappolima' scheme, aimed at promoting domestic flower cultivation and marketing, also performed strongly — 5,500 farmer groups under Kudumbashree cultivated 113.17 metric tonnes of flowers, earning Rs 1.16 crore, all of which goes directly to the farmers.

The achievement once again demonstrates the strength of Kudumbashree's agricultural marketing network and the capabilities of women farmers, while also ensuring that consumers have access to quality locally grown produce.
