Kottayam Medical College Performs Historic Triple Organ Transplant from Single Donor

Kottayam: Kottayam Medical College Hospital has made history by performing three major organ transplants from a single donor in one day, becoming the first government hospital in India to achieve this feat. The organs transplanted included the heart, lungs, and kidneys. This also marked the first-ever lung transplant conducted in a government hospital and the eleventh heart transplant at Kottayam Medical College.
The organs were donated by A. R. Aneesh (38) from Thiruvananthapuram, who was declared brain dead at Kottayam Medical College. Health Minister Veena George expressed her gratitude and paid tribute to Aneesh’s family, who agreed to donate his organs despite their grief.
Aneesh, who served as an Assistant Prison Officer at Poojappura Central Jail, donated nine organs in total, including the heart, lungs, two kidneys, pancreas, liver, a hand, and two corneas. One kidney, the heart, lungs, and two corneas were transplanted at Kottayam Medical College, while the other kidney, pancreas, and hand went to Amrita Hospital in Kochi, and the liver was provided to a patient at Caritas Hospital, Kottayam. The organ transfer procedures and coordination were conducted under the supervision of K-SOTTO.
On October 17, after returning from his visit to Sabarimala, Aneesh suffered a severe head injury in Pamba around 8:30 p.m He was immediately admitted to a hospital in Pathanamthitta and later shifted to Kottayam Medical College. After brain death was confirmed on October 22, his family consented to the organ donation. His surviving family members include his mother, Ambika Kumari, and sisters A. R. Lakshmi and A. R. Anju.
