Kollam: A 21-year-old Bangladeshi national has been arrested in Kollam for illegally residing in India, police said on Sunday. The accused, identified as Parimal Das, had reportedly entered the country through West Bengal without valid documents.
During interrogation, police found that Parimal Das had obtained a fake Aadhaar card with the help of local agents by providing a false address. The agent who assisted him in forging the identity card has also been named as an accused in the case.
Police said a case has been registered against Parimal Das under relevant provisions of the Foreigners Act and for forgery. He is currently under remand and will be taken into police custody for further questioning to gather details about possible networks of illegal immigrants in the region, said Kollam ACP S Shareef.
The arrest was made during an inspection drive called Surakshitha Theeram, launched by the Kollam City Police to collect detailed information on migrant workers engaged in fishing and related coastal activities.
According to officials, documents of nearly 1,300 migrant workers have been verified under this initiative so far. The programme aims to create a centralised database of migrant workers, recording their place of residence, employment, and employer details.
For verification, police are using Aadhaar authentication and biometric systems. The project is designed to help monitor inter-state workers employed in fishing boats, improve coastal security, and identify individuals with criminal backgrounds.
Following Parimal Das’s arrest, the police have decided to intensify checks in coastal areas of Kollam in the coming days to trace more such cases of illegal immigration, the statement added.
