Kochi: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday said the Kochi Water Metro has garnered global attention, with several countries showing interest in adopting the state’s innovative water transport model.
Speaking after inaugurating two new Water Metro terminals at Mattancherry and Willingdon Island, built at a total cost of 38 crore rupees, Vijayan said multiple Indian states have also approached Kerala to explore the possibility of implementing similar systems.
He noted that since its inauguration in 2023, the Water Metro has carried nearly half a crore passengers in just two years, including daily commuters and tourists.
Vijayan described the Water Metro as a major step in strengthening Kochi’s infrastructure, adding that it has become a source of pride for Malayalis. The initiative has connected several small inhabited islands to the mainland and eased vehicular congestion in the city.
“It has transformed the face of the port city and, moving forward, can significantly enhance the quality of life for its residents,” the chief minister said. He also highlighted the project’s potential to boost regional development and tourism.
Vijayan thanked the Archdiocese of Varapuzha for donating 22 cents of land for one of the terminals.
Later, in a post on X, he said the Kochi Water Metro is “charting new waters of success and redefining urban transport in Kerala.” He added that the newly inaugurated Mattancherry and Willingdon Island terminals, featuring heritage-sensitive design and eco-friendly elements, mark another milestone in Kochi’s sustainable mobility journey.
The chief minister also emphasised that the Water Metro is one of several sectors where Kerala has emerged as a pioneer, alongside significant progress in health and education. He urged collective efforts to strengthen both infrastructure and social welfare for the state’s overall development.
Following the inauguration, Pinarayi Vijayan travelled on the Water Metro from Mattancherry to Willingdon Island.
With the launch of the two new terminals, the total number of Water Metro stations has risen to 12, Kochi Water Metro Ltd said. Both terminals were constructed entirely on water to preserve the area’s heritage and natural environment, retaining existing trees and greenery.
