Kochi: A long- pending dream of hundreds of landless and homeless families in the city is set to come true, with 394 families moving into newly built flats at Thuruthy. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the housing complexes on September 27 at 5 pm.

The information was shared by Kochi Mayor M Anilkumar in his Facebook post, highlighting the completion of the twin housing projects under the Rajiv Awas Yojana scheme, implemented by Kochi Corporation. Of the two complexes, one was directly built by the Corporation, while the other was constructed by Kochi Smart Mission Ltd (CSML) on behalf of the civic body.

The first tower, built on 10,796.42 sq m at a cost of Rs 41.74 crore, has 11 floors with 199 units of 300 sq ft each. Each unit comes with a living/dining area, bedroom, kitchen, balcony and two toilets. The complex also includes 81 parking slots, a 105 KLD sewage treatment plant, three elevators, three staircases, common areas on the first and 11th floors, an anganwadi, and 14 shop rooms.

The second complex, constructed by CSML for Rs 44.01 crore, covers 10,221 sq m. It has 13 floors with 195 residential units of 350 sq ft each, 15 units on every floor. The ground floor features 18 shop rooms and parking facilities, while rooftop solar panels have been installed in the common area. The tower has three elevators, stairways, and parking space for 68 cars and 17 two-wheelers.

According to the Mayor, the project will provide modern, clean and secure homes for 394 families, marking a major milestone in the Corporation’s efforts to rehabilitate the city’s landless and homeless.
