Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has issued a yellow alert in several parts of the state following a rise in ultraviolet (UV) radiation over the past 24 hours. The areas under alert include: Kottarakkara (Kollam), Konni (Pathanamthitta), Chengannur (Alappuzha), Changanassery (Kottayam), Munnar (Idukki), Thrithala (Palakkad), Ponnani (Malappuram), and Mananthavady (Wayanad).
Authorities warned that prolonged exposure to UV rays can lead to sunburn, skin diseases, eye disorders, and other health issues. The alert levels are determined by the UV index, with yellow indicating an index of 6–7, orange at 8–10, and red above 11.
Public Advisory
The highest UV levels occur between 10 am and 3 pm. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight during these hours.
People working outdoors, including fishermen, bikers, tourists, and those with skin, eye, or immune-related health conditions, should take extra precautions.
Use hats, umbrellas, sunglasses, and wear cotton clothing that covers the body when stepping out.
Take breaks in shaded areas during outdoor activities.
UV exposure is generally higher in mountainous and tropical regions, so residents in such areas should remain vigilant.
Officials urged the public to follow the advisory to reduce the risk of UV-related health problems.
