Thiruvananthapuram: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels have risen sharply in Kerala, prompting the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) to issue orange alerts in five locations based on data from the past 24 hours.

The orange alert, indicating the need for heightened public caution, has been declared in Kottarakkara, Konni, Chengannur, Changanassery and Munnar.

Meanwhile, yellow alerts have been issued in Kalamassery, Ollur, Thrithala, Ponnani and Mananthavady.

Authorities warned that prolonged exposure to strong UV rays could lead to sunburn, skin diseases, eye disorders and other health problems. According to the UV index classification, a yellow alert is issued when the index ranges between 6 and 7, orange alert when it reaches 8 to 10, and a red alert when the index exceeds 11.

Safety Advisory

Officials have advised the public to take precautions, especially between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when UV radiation levels are usually at their highest. People are urged to avoid prolonged direct exposure to sunlight during these hours.

Special caution has been recommended for outdoor workers, fishermen engaged in sea and inland fishing, water transport workers, motorcyclists, tourists, and individuals with skin or eye conditions, cancer patients, and those with weakened immunity.

Residents are advised to wear hats, use umbrellas, and wear sunglasses when stepping outdoors during the daytime. Wearing full-sleeved cotton clothing and taking breaks in shaded areas during travel or outdoor work are also recommended.

Authorities added that UV levels tend to be higher in mountainous and tropical regions, urging people living in such areas to remain particularly vigilant.
