Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department has forecast isolated thunderstorms with lightning across Keralam for the next five days, offering some relief from the ongoing heat wave while simultaneously raising the risk of lightning-related incidents. Isolated thunderstorms are expected today (April 26) and tomorrow, while from April 28 to 30, thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds gusting between 40 and 50 kilometres per hour are forecast across the state.
Lightning Safety Advisory
Authorities have issued a comprehensive advisory urging the public to take precautions from the moment dark clouds appear, as lightning may strike without being visible.
At the first sign of lightning, move immediately into a secure building. Keep windows and doors shut during storms and avoid standing near them. Stay away from walls and floors inside buildings. Disconnect all electrical appliances from the mains, and avoid using landline telephones — mobile phones are safe. Children and adults must avoid terraces, open grounds, and elevated locations. Never shelter under trees or park vehicles beneath them. If travelling in a vehicle, remain inside with limbs kept in. Cyclists, motorcyclists, and tractor riders must stop and seek shelter until the storm passes.
Fisherfolk must head to shore at the first sight of storm clouds — suspend all fishing and boating activity and do not stand on a boat's deck during lightning. Do not enter water bodies for swimming or fishing during a storm. Do not fly kites. Do not go to terraces or open areas to retrieve laundry during a storm. Avoid bathing or collecting water from taps, as lightning current can travel through pipes. Secure loose objects that could be blown over by strong winds. Do not leave pets tethered outdoors during storms.
If caught in the open with no shelter available, crouch low with feet together, tuck your head between your knees, and curl into a ball. Installing lightning conductors on buildings and surge protectors for electrical equipment is strongly recommended as a long-term safety measure.
Lightning strike victims carry no residual electrical charge — assist them without hesitation. The first 30 seconds after a strike are critical for saving a life. Administer first aid immediately and seek urgent medical help.
