Thiruvananthapuram: Amid the impossibility of escaping technology in the modern world, the Education Department has sought public opinion on controlling social media addiction among children. With many countries and other Indian states implementing social media regulations for children, such discussions are highly relevant in Kerala, a state at the forefront of internet literacy, said General Education Minister V Sivankutty.

Minister Sivankutty noted that the childhood meant to be spent running and playing is increasingly confined to mobile screens, which negatively affects both physical and mental development. He warned that a generation enslaved to the digital world could pose serious challenges to the state’s future. He emphasized that the government’s goal is not to completely ban internet use, but rather to ensure its responsible and prudent usage.

The government is primarily seeking public opinion on how to implement regulations effectively. Suggestions can be made on whether strict social media laws for children should be introduced or whether widespread awareness programs for parents and children are a better approach. The minister expressed hope for active cooperation from everyone to ensure a safe and secure future for the children.
