Snakebite Cases Rise in Kerala, Health Dept Rolls Out New Action Plan

Thiruvananthapuram: Snakebite incidents seeking treatment have risen sharply across Kerala. Yesterday alone, nine people were bitten statewide, with Kozhikode reporting the highest at three cases.
Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Ernakulam, and Kannur districts also logged snake bites cases yesterday. 108 ambulance data shows 15 people under observation for suspected snakebites.
Health department figures, based on antivenom administration, highlight three cases each in Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, and Kozhikode. Rising deaths prompted a special action plan.
Antivenom is now available at 151 government and 150 private hospitals. Hotspot mapping targets high-incidence areas, with plans to stock antivenom at PHCs/CHCs. Special protocols for hump-nosed and Malabar pit viper bites will be enforced immediately.
Ahead of monsoon, the department urges keeping homes and surroundings clean, using torches at night, and staying vigilant against increasing snake activity.
