Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala has created a new milestone in its housing sector with the completion of five lakh houses under the LIFE Mission. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan officially announced the achievement at a grand ceremony held at Poojappura Ground in Thiruvananthapuram.

The LIFE Mission, launched on May 23, 2017, aims to make Kerala a homeless-free state. With the completion of 5,00,364 houses across the state, the project marks one of the largest housing initiatives undertaken by a state government in India.

At the ceremony, General Education Minister V Sivankutty delivered the welcome address. Representing nearly 20 lakh beneficiaries of the five lakh completed homes, Sajitha Kumari of Sajitha Bhavan in Amburi Grama Panchayat and Mumtaz of Salina Manzil in Nellanad Grama Panchayat received the symbolic model and keys from the Chief Minister.

The project has involved a total expenditure of Rs 20,831.60 crore, of which Rs 18,342.7 crore was borne by the state government. The central contribution amounted to Rs 2,488.89 crore. Notably, construction progressed at a record pace — averaging one house every ten minutes, or approximately 152 houses per day.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister attended the housewarming ceremony of Komalakumari’s new home in Karakulam Panchayat. Local Self-Government Minister M B Rajesh presided over the public meeting. Ministers K Rajan, Roshi Augustine, K Krishnankutty, and A K Saseendran were also present.

During the ceremony, well-wishers who donated land for the housing initiative were honoured, along with supporting institutions such as Chittilappilly Foundation founded by Kochouseph Chittilappilly, Lions Clubs International, and Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO), which extended assistance to the project.

A special scheme providing Rs 6 lakh per house is being implemented in Scheduled Tribe areas to ensure inclusive development. The government also announced that housing projects, including modern flat complexes with enhanced facilities, will be further intensified in the coming days.
