Thiruvananthapuram: In an attempt to democratize digital access and return the governance of information back to the people, Kerala will launch its Over-The-Top (OTT) streaming platform — KFON OTT today at Nishagandhi auditorium. Kerala Chief Minister and Communist Party of India (Marxist) Politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan will dedicate the initiative to the people of Kerala.

Derived from the state's high-speed Internet project 'Kerala Fibre Optic Network' (KFON), the idea was to remove the barriers to communication and digital connectivity. The KFON OTT, therefore, would be working directly against the monopoly of private owners of content, and would be making available an array of entertainment and educational programs to all citizens at a very nominal fee.

More than 300 digital channels and 29 well-known streaming services will be integrated into KFON OTT at launch, featuring content from sites like Disney+ Hotstar, Amazon Prime Lite, Sony LIV, ZEE5, FanCode, and Discovery+, among others. By centralising access, the platform eliminates the gate-keeping function that big corporations have historically played, giving consumers the flexibility to make their own decisions without being constrained by exorbitant fees. As demand increases, plans are on to add Netflix and the entire Amazon Prime service.

This effort is unique since it is based on the fundamental principles of exclusivity and fairness. With pricing mechanisms that put accessibility before profit, the government has pledged to maintain the platform's services reasonably priced. OTT access will be available to those who are currently enrolled in KFON's internet services at reasonable rates.

KFON itself is a trans formative project designed to extend high-quality internet infrastructure to all corners of the state. Already, more than 115,000 connections have been made between residences, institutions, and government offices. Providing free internet connections to almost 14,000 low-income families has been a notable accomplishment, and efforts are underway to serve an additional 75,000 households this year. This broad availability makes sure that economic inequality won't widen digital gaps but rather that they will be reduced through collective effort.

From historic grassroots movements that fought for land reforms and workers’ rights, to contemporary struggles ensuring public welfare and social justice, Kerala has consistently demonstrated that collective action can overcome entrenched structures of exclusion.

KFON OTT is the latest expression of this ethos. It rejects the notion that access to knowledge and culture should be dictated by market forces or limited to those with purchasing power. Instead, it reiterates that digital infrastructure and content belong to the public domain, resources to be managed transparently and distributed equitably to liberate everyone.
