Thiruvananthapuram: In a touching and eco -friendly move, the Kerala Health Department, in collaboration with the Forest Department, has launched a unique initiative on World Environment Day, gifting a sapling to every family leaving the hospital after childbirth. Health Minister Veena George inaugurated the initiative named ‘Jeevan’ at the SAT Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on June 5.
This green gesture is part of the government’s broader mission to promote environmental awareness and sustainability. “Just as a child grows, a tree gifted on the same day will also grow, reminding the family of their responsibility towards nature,” said Minister Veena George.
The initiative will initially begin at SAT Hospital and later expand to other maternity hospitals across the state. As part of the existing Mathruyanam scheme, new mothers are already being provided free transport from the hospital to home. Now, along with the joyful journey, they’ll also carry home a living reminder of nature, a plant to nurture.
The state observes June 5 as World Environment Day every year, underlining the importance of protecting nature for future generations. This year’s global theme, ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, also finds special mention in the government’s approach. The Health Department has already implemented ‘Green Protocols’ in hospitals to cut down on the use of plastic. Hospitals have been directed to avoid disposable plastic items and ensure proper scientific management of any plastic waste generated.
“Plastic pollution is no longer just an environmental issue – it has become a serious public health threat. Microplastics are now linked to nervous system disorders, respiratory and liver cancers, heart diseases, and hormonal imbalances,” the minister said. That’s why awareness campaigns and strict action against plastic usage are also being strengthened in all health institutions.
The saplings distributed under ‘Jeevan’ were formally handed over to the SAT Hospital team by Minister Veena George at a special event held at the Secretariat. Medical College Principal Dr. Jabbar, SAT Superintendent Dr. Bindu, and award-winning nursing officers Jyothi and Sajitha received the saplings.
“This simple gift is a reminder that protecting nature is key to ensuring a healthy future for our next generation,” the minister added.
