High UV Index Alert in Kerala as Munnar Records Level 10; Orange Alert for Four Locations

Thiruvananthapuram: The highest UV index in the state was recorded in Munnar (10) over the past 24 hours, prompting authorities to issue warnings in several regions.

Based on the latest data, an Orange Alert has been declared for Munnar, Changanassery, Chengannur and Konni. A Yellow Alert has been issued for Mananthavady, Beypore, Ponnani, Thrithala, Ollur and Kottarakkara.

The State Disaster Management Authority has cautioned that prolonged exposure to high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause sunburn, skin disorders, eye damage, and other serious health problems.

Authorities have urged the public to take the following precautions:

1. The UV index is typically highest between 10 am and 3 pm. Avoid prolonged direct exposure to sunlight during these hours.

2. Outdoor workers, fishermen engaged in sea and inland fishing, water transport workers, bikers, tourists, cancer patients, and individuals with skin or eye conditions or weakened immunity should exercise extra caution.

3. Use protective gear such as hats, umbrellas, and UV-protective sunglasses when stepping outdoors.

4. Wear loose-fitting cotton clothing that covers the body.

5. Take regular breaks in shaded areas while travelling or working outdoors.

Officials also noted that UV levels tend to be higher in mountainous and tropical regions, making residents in these areas particularly vulnerable. People are advised to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines to minimize health risks.
