Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is set to experience widespread rainfall over the next five days due to prevailing westerly winds and a cyclonic circulation over northern Karnataka, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.
According to the IMD, heavy rain and strong winds are likely in several parts of the state from June 14 to 17. The agency has cautioned against venturing out to sea along the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coast during this period, warning of strong winds and rough weather conditions.
On Friday, the IMD issued an orange alert for 10 districts and a yellow alert for four others. For Saturday, a red alert has been issued in two districts, with nine districts under orange alert and two under yellow.
A red alert indicates extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours. An orange alert signals very heavy rainfall between 11 cm and 20 cm, while a yellow alert denotes rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm.
The southwest monsoon arrived early in Kerala on May 24, bringing intense rainfall that caused widespread damage to public and private property. Roads and low-lying areas were inundated, and several trees and electricity poles were uprooted across the state due to strong winds.
Though the rains had slightly subsided after May 31, the IMD now forecasts a renewed spell of heavier rainfall in the coming days.
