Kerala Rises as EV Startup Hub in India: NITI Aayog 2024

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is making remarkable progress in the electric vehicle (EV) startup sector, according to NITI Aayog’s Electric Mobility Index – 2024. The state scored 60 out of 100 points. It secured 33 points in transport electrification, 46 in EV research, and 34 in charging infrastructure availability.


Kerala is also far ahead in terms of vehicle sales and public awareness about electric vehicles. The state demonstrates excellence in areas such as transport electrification progress, availability of charging infrastructure, and EV-related research.


With a total score of 36 points for overall performance in the sector, Kerala has been placed in the ‘Aspirant’ category.


The report makes special mention of the prototype Lithium Titanate (LTO) battery developed by Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) and Travancore Titanium Products Ltd (TTP).


LTO Battery

The Lithium Titanate (Lithium–Titanium–Oxide, LTO) battery was indigenously developed by Kerala in 2023. As part of formulating the state’s EV policy, the EV Development and Manufacturing Consortium was set up under the leadership of the nodal agency K-DISC (Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council).

The consortium includes partners such as VSSC, Travancore Titanium Products Ltd (TTP), C-DAC Thiruvananthapuram, and the Trivandrum Engineering Science and Technology Research Park.
