The native place bids farewell to Kanathil Jameela

Kozhikode: With tears, the people bid farewell to Kanathil Jameela MLA, who had been a comforting presence for those who affected by disasters. The MLA, who passed away due to cancer, was laid to rest on Tuesday at 5 pm with official honours at the Kuniyilkkadavu Juma Masjid graveyard in Atholi. A condolence meeting was held at Parambath Bazaar.
She passed away on Saturday evening while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kozhikode. CPI M leaders received the body from the hospital in the morning and brought it to the district committee office for public homage. The public could pay respects at the CPI M district committee office from 8 am to 10 am and at the Koyilandy Town Hall from 11 am.
CPI M central committee member E P Jayarajan, P K Sreemathi, Elamaram Kareem, CPI M state committee member P Mohanan, DYFI state president Vaseef, and various other leaders offered their tributes. Another public viewing was held at Thalakkulathur in the afternoon, after which the body was taken to her residence.
For over three decades, Kanathil Jameela had been an active presence in Kerala’s public sphere. She had served twice as Kozhikode district panchayat president and had also worked as a panchayat president and block panchayat president, showcasing notable administrative achievements. Through people-centred planning, she secured significant progress and remained a women leader who made valuable contributions to Kerala’s public space.
In the 2021 assembly election, Kanathil Jameela defeated Congress candidate N Subrahmanyan by 8,572 votes. With this victory, she also achieved the historic milestone of becoming the first woman MLA from the Muslim community in Malabar.
