Heavy Rains Forecast Across Kerala: IMD Issues Orange and Yellow Alerts

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of orange and yellow alerts across Kerala, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next five days. Several districts are expected to experience intense showers, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, prompting authorities to urge public caution.


An orange alert, indicating the likelihood of very heavy rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours, has been declared for the following districts:


  • May 20:* Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod

  • May 23: Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Ernakulam


Meanwhile, a yellow alert, which signals isolated heavy rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm, is in effect across a broader set of districts on the following days, with the possibility of thunderstorms:


  • May 20: Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram

  • May 21: Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod

  • May 22: Kannur, Kasaragod

  • May 23: Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad


The IMD has also cautioned against thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, heightening the risk of accidents and damage in vulnerable areas.


Public Advised to Stay Alert


Local authorities have urged residents, especially those in landslide-prone and low-lying areas, to remain vigilant. Precautionary measures are being advised to mitigate risks related to water logging, flash floods, and lightning strikes.


Disaster management teams are on standby, and the state government is closely monitoring the situation. Fisher-folks and tourists are advised to exercise caution during this period.


With the southwest monsoon expected to set in shortly, officials are preparing for intensified weather activity in the coming days.
