High UV Index Recorded in Munnar; Orange Alert Issued

Thiruvananthapuram: The highest ultraviolet (UV) index of 8 was recorded in Munnar. As a result, the State Disaster Management Authority has declared an orange alert. Based on UV index data from the last 24 hours, a yellow alert has been declared in Kottarakara (Kollam), Konni (Pathanamthitta), Chengannur (Alappuzha), Changanassery (Kottayam), Ollur (Thrissur), Thrithala (Palakkad), Ponnani (Malappuram), and Mananthavady (Wayanad).
The State Disaster Management Authority has cautioned that prolonged exposure to high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation can lead to sunburn, skin disorders, eye damage, and other serious health problems. Authorities have urged the public to take the following precautions:
The UV index is typically highest between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Avoid prolonged direct exposure to sunlight during these hours.
Outdoor workers, fishermen engaged in sea and inland fishing, water transport workers, bikers, tourists, cancer patients, and individuals with skin or eye conditions or weakened immunity should exercise extra caution.
Use protective gear such as hats, umbrellas, and UV-protective sunglasses when stepping outdoors.
Wear loose-fitting cotton clothing that covers the body.
Take regular breaks in shaded areas while traveling or working outdoors.
Officials also noted that UV levels tend to be higher in mountainous and tropical regions, making residents in these areas particularly vulnerable. People are advised to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines to minimise health risks.
