Thiruvananthapuram: Dileep was once the most famous stars in the malayalam film industry, who earned the name 'Janapriya Nayakan'. He lead the malayalam film industry from the early 2000s to late 2010s, giving back to back hits like CID Moosa, and Meeshamadhavan. He rose to become one of the most bankable stars, strengthening his postion as the top star in malayalam cinema. Both public, critics and the industry insiders put their faith in him, expecting him to deliver films that are both commercially and critically successful.

But all of that changed in 2017.

On 17 February 2017, a leading Malayalam actress was abducted and sexually assaulted inside a moving vehicle. The assault was reportedly recorded. Initially, suspects arrested included her former driver Sunilkumar, also known as "Pulsar Suni". But when a letter surfaced from jail suggesting a conspiracy — naming Dileep as the “hirer” — the case took a dramatic turn.

In July 2017, Dileep was arrested and later named as the eighth accused in the case. He spent 83 days in jail before being granted bail. The legal battle that followed for nearly nine years damaged the once beloved actor's public image. He was removed from AMMA, the malayalam actors' organization, over which he yielded immense power once. As more evidences of the conspiracy and cruelty behind the incident came out, both his colleagues, friends and fans distanced from him.

Meanwhile, the assault case created a ripple effect and changed the landscape of the film industry forever. Conversations about abuse of power, misogyny, treatment of female actors in malayalam cinema gained traction within the public. Raising their disagreements with the stance of AMMA in certain matters, and formed the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), which stood by the survivor through this long battle. The LDF government later appointed a three member Committee-- Hema Committee-- to study the situation of the women in malayalam cinema.

The committee’s report, released in 2024, hit the Malayalam film industry like a storm. Following its release, allegations surfaced against several actors and directors. Many women came forward to share their traumatic experiences. As accused individuals resigned from leadership positions in AMMA, women eventually rose to the top of the organization.

After more than eight years of trial, the court verdict against the accused—including Dileep — is scheduled for 8 December 2025. Irrespective of the verdict today, a clear consensus is that Dileep’s star-status is unlikely to be revived to its former height.

The story of Dileep is a cautionary tale — of meteoric rise, of unchecked power and how those can lead to collapse. As the legal battle is at the final laps, the social and cultural reverberations of the case has reshaped how we view stardom, accountability, and justice in cinema.
