Thiruvananthapuram: In the wake of the UDF electoral victory in Kerala, an intense power struggle has erupted within the Congress over the chief minister’s post. Amid the growing contest, Mahila Congress leader Deepthi Mary Varghese has openly backed K. C. Venugopal for the top position.

Deepthi Mary Varghese asserted that Venugopal played a decisive leadership role in steering the party to victory. She highlighted his significant contribution to the Congress wins in Kannur and Alappuzha, noting that his interventions were instrumental in reclaiming two crucial seats in Kannur. According to her, Venugopal also ensured unity within the party during the candidate selection process, preventing internal disputes and bringing leaders together.

However, her claims have sparked debate within party circles, as critics point out that she had earlier printed campaign posters even before the finalisation of candidates—raising questions about her current assertion that the selection process was smooth and consensus-driven.

She further emphasized that Venugopal has effectively handled key responsibilities assigned by the AICC at the national level. She argued that his coordination efforts, as a representative of the party high command, were pivotal in securing the UDF’s electoral success.

Meanwhile, senior leaders including V. D. Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala continue to vie for the chief minister’s post, intensifying the internal contest.
