UV Radiation Levels: Orange Alert Issued in Three Districts in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels have reached dangerous levels in several districts across Kerala, prompting health warnings. According to data from the past 24 hours, the highest UV index of 8 was recorded in Munnar (Idukki), Chengannur (Alappuzha), and Konni (Pathanamthitta). In response, the State Disaster Management Authority has issued an orange alert for these areas.
A yellow alert has also been issued for the following locations: Kottarakkara (Kollam), Changanassery (Kottayam), Ollur (Thrissur), Thrithala (Palakkad), and Mananthavady (Wayanad). Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can cause a range of health issues, including sunburn, skin diseases, eye disorders, and other serious conditions.
Experts recommend taking extra precautions to minimize UV exposure, especially during peak hours, from 10 am to 3 pm, when the UV index is at its highest. During this time, it is advised to avoid prolonged direct sunlight.
Those particularly vulnerable include outdoor workers, fishermen (both on sea and inland waters), individuals in water transport, bikers, tourists, people with existing skin or eye conditions, cancer patients, and those with compromised immune systems.
To protect against harmful UV rays, the public is encouraged to use sun protection gear such as hats, umbrellas, and sunglasses. Wearing loose-fitting, cotton clothing that covers the body is also recommended.
Additionally, seeking shade during breaks or outdoor activities can provide respite from the harmful effects of UV radiation.
UV radiation is typically stronger in high-altitude regions and tropical areas. Even on clear days with no clouds, the UV index can be dangerously high. Surfaces such as water bodies and sand, which reflect UV rays, further increase exposure, particularly in coastal and lakeside areas.
